Recanati, in the Marches, is situated on a long green hill, 300
metres above sea level, overlooking the sea and the two fertile
valleys of the Potenza and Musone rivers. The Adriatic sea is at
10 km.,at Porto Recanati, which is also the nearest railway
station.
There are not sure informations but different opinions about the
origin of the first inhabited centre. According to the historian
A. G. Vogel, the first inhabitants were the "Ricinenses" a
people coming from eastern countries.
There came, later, partly the people runaway from Helvia Ricina,
(the Roman Colony settled in 265 a.C. in Potenza valley), when
the Gothes destroyed it towards 408 p.C.
Other nearest centers are Ancona at 32 km., Macerata at 23 km.,
Loreto at 6 km.
The view from the town is of striking beauty: one really feels
the sense of the infinite, with the vision of the innumerable
little towns, villages, farms dotting the luminous green hills;
and - in the disstance - the marvellous view of the highest
mountains of the Apennines; all crowned by an enchanting blue
sky.
Birthplace of the Poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) and the
Tenor Beniamino Gigli, numerous other famous artists (among them
the opera componist Giuseppe Persiani 1799-1869) and scientists
are connected with Recanati, there are many interesting old
monuments, churches, old palaces and art-galleries to be seen.
The town is also the home of the National Center of "Studi
Leopardiani".
Recanati is famous for the high level of her handicraft
industries. There are three companies: Ottaviani for its
silverworks, Clementoni for its computerized toys, and
Guzzini for its products of home economics. In Recanati was
born in 1844 Paolo Soprani, founder of modern accordion
industry.
A lovely holiday resort which also offers artistic manifestation
of great importance - both literary and musically - Recanati is
a real pleasant stay for the increasing number of visitors which
come each year.
