The daughter of Beniamino Gigli, Rina was born in Naples on 31st of January 1916. She studied playing piano and accompanied his father among others in the Carnegie Hall in the middle of Twenties. But the singing won finally. She sang for the first time in publicity, 7th of February 1936, in the Roman Grand Hotel, but her official debút happened on 23rd of May 1943 in the Regio Theater of Parma prepared by the celebrated soprano Rosina Storchio in the title role of La Traviata and with his father Beniamino as Alfredo. The succes was splendid. After that she sang in the great opera houses of the different part of the world: The Roman Opera, The Colón Theatre of Buenos Aires, La Scala of Milan, The Massimo of Palermo and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden of London, in the Opera of Madrid and many other theatres. She sang in the Arena of Verona in 1950 as Mimì of La Bohéme with Giuseppe Di Stefano. She has given concerts in many countries among othes: Germany, Brasil, Japan, South Corea. She got a magnificent succes in Antverp in 1954 as Violetta in Traviata with the tenor Gianni Raimondi. She continued her career until 1971, when she gave the farewell to the stages as Nedda in Pagliacci in San Carlo of Naples. The repertoire of Rina consisted of 35 role and the career as singer lasted exactly 35 years. |
The voice of Rina Gigli can be heard in some studio registrations with father, where she sings the operatic duetts (Otello, Amico Fritz, Elisir d'amore, Mefistofele). In addition to it has been publicised the complete live registrations of Amico Fritz (1951) and Elisir d'amore (1953) in San Carlo of Naples, where she sings with father Beniamino.
Rina Gigli got in 1988 the Cross of the Merit of the Italian Republic and in the following year the artist's pension of the Italian State.
On 15th of October 1995 she was nominated as The Onorary President of the Finnish Beniamino Gigli Society. She lived in Recanati.
Rina Gigli died in Recanati 22.8.2002.
